A guy I spoke to last summer told me how he had sailed across the English Channel to France with his wife and small children. Unfortunately soon after they arrived in Cherbourg a storm blew up and the family refused to sail back home with him. Instead, they all caught the cross channel ferry back to England and it was agreed that he should go back the following weekend to bring the boat back home; single handed.
The guy took the Friday off work, caught the ferry back to France, and on the Saturday morning he set sail. The wind was light the whole way and it took him 23 hours to complete the 60 mile voyage. He had no self steering on board so he had to steer the boat himself for the whole 23 hours. He told me he was totally exhausted by the time he got back.
He should have had a Steersman.
