Installation
Here are the main components, with the basic installation details

| The Steersman is designed for sailing boats between 20 ft and
35 ft (6m and 10m) overall length.
The winch platform is about 400mm x 200mm, and the pivot arm has a radius of about 600mm The tiller arm is supplied as a tube, which is cut to length during installation. The tube end fittings cover any saw marks, and the eyebolt fitted to each end provides about 50mm (2 inches) adjustment to each end. 4 holes need to be drilled on each winch deck to attach the base platform, the diagram above shows how this is calculated. We will also supply a former for the holes. There are 5 stanchion fittings to be attached, and 2 fittings to be screwed to the tiller. The winch platform simply slides on to the pivot shaft, and there is a small retaining pin, and a cover to be fitted. The winch is not supplied with the Steersman. We can pre drill the winch platforms if you can supply the make and model of the unit you have on board, or we can supply a Lewmar self tailing winch, pre installed. We can quote for this separately. If you do not have a self tailing winch, a rubber fitting known as the Wincher can be fitted to the top of your winch to convert it. Full instructions on how to set up the Steersman for each point of sailing, are provided in a laminated form to keep on board. |
The Steersman works with a self tailing winch. We can supply and fit a suitable Lewmar model prior to dispatch if required.
The design assumes that the boat has a pushpit, and stanchions.
It also works with wheel steering. Here's an example based on the Beneteau Oceanis 343
